Understanding the HDMI Port on Your Ugreen NAS

Setting up a network-attached storage server is a practical method for accessing files remotely without incurring cloud storage fees. Among the available hardware options, Ugreen NAS units feature a built-in HDMI port that frequently puzzles users. Because network-attached storage is primarily designed for internet-based connectivity, discovering a physical video output might appear unusual. However, the HDMI port on your Ugreen NAS serves several distinct and helpful functions.

While network storage servers from various manufacturers share similar video output capabilities, specific models often include unique operational quirks. Ugreen NAS servers present specific behaviors that can introduce confusion regarding how to use the HDMI port. Understanding these operational tricks ahead of time provides practical benefits beyond simple file retrieval.

Watching Media Files

The most straightforward application for the HDMI port on a Ugreen NAS is watching media files stored directly on the hardware. Streaming media typically relies on smart televisions or dedicated streaming sticks, but a direct physical connection eliminates the need for external streaming devices. This direct connection also allows you to link the server to a standard computer monitor or a projector.

Connecting the hardware is only the first step, as the system requires a specific auxiliary setup to function. Upon establishing a physical connection, the display presents a notification requiring the use of the official Ugreen phone application to play media. The mobile application includes a specific option to cast stored media through the connected video cable. Consequently, the phone application functions as a remote control to manage playback navigation.

Accessing Advanced Features

Beyond media playback, the video port enables several advanced administrative features for the system. Connecting both a display and a keyboard allows direct access to the device BIOS and the underlying system terminal. While typical daily operations rarely require these interfaces, they remain essential when replacing the server operating system, resolving boot failures, or modifying low-level configurations without an SSH connection.

Accessing the BIOS requires connecting a display and initiating a system restart. Pressing the Ctrl and F12 keys simultaneously during startup opens the BIOS setup utility. Users modifying these low-level settings must navigate to the Advanced tab, locate Watchdog Settings, and disable Watch Dog Control. Leaving this watchdog enabled forces the server to reboot automatically after a predetermined time interval.

Connecting a display and keyboard also provides direct access to the server terminal. Pressing Ctrl, Alt, and F1 during startup generally brings up the terminal interface, though specific key combinations can vary across different hardware models. While network administrators typically access the terminal remotely via an SSH client, direct physical access offers a straightforward alternative. Modifying parameters within the terminal requires careful handling, as incorrect configurations can introduce severe system errors.
