Apple has announced an updated iMac desktop line featuring the M6 chip, bringing substantial performance gains and enhanced artificial intelligence capabilities to the desktop computer. Despite skipping a generation to jump straight from the M4 to the M6 processor, the hardware exterior and physical design remain identical to the previous generation.
Performance and AI Capabilities
Apple claims that the new iMac M6 delivers up to 1.5 times faster performance in spreadsheet applications like Excel compared to the M4 model. Graphics and gaming performance see an even larger leap, with up to 2 times faster execution and dedicated support for ray tracing. On-device artificial intelligence processing also receives significant attention, featuring up to 5 times faster prompt processing speeds in LM Studio.

Connectivity and Storage Improvements
Wireless and wired networking receive notable updates, moving from Wi-Fi 6E to Wi-Fi 7 and upgrading Bluetooth from version 5.3 to version 6. The previous Gigabit Ethernet port is now replaced by a 2.5Gb Ethernet port on the updated configuration. Additionally, Apple states that the solid-state drive delivers up to 2 times faster read and write speeds, allowing large video projects and photo libraries to load almost instantly.
Aside from these internal component updates, the physical specifications, dimensions, and display characteristics remain unchanged from the prior model. The camera setup, speaker configurations, and port selections—offering either two or four USB 4 ports alongside a 3.5mm headphone jack—are carried over directly.
Design and Availability
The updated all-in-one computer maintains the same exterior form factor and is available in the same seven vibrant color options. Features like the visual design, macOS 27, and Siri AI capabilities are already present on earlier versions of the hardware. Pre-orders for the iMac M6 begin tomorrow at 10:10 a.m. PT, with customer deliveries scheduled to start the following Friday without any reported price increases.
