Artemis 3 Crewed Lunar Test Mission Overview

NASA has outlined detailed plans for the Artemis 3 mission, which will feature three spacecraft launching on three separate heavy-lift rockets from Florida within a two-week window. Blue Origin, SpaceX, and NASA are collaborating to launch these heavy-lift vehicles in a compressed timeframe. Under an overhauled program structure, Artemis 3 will now focus on testing at least one moon lander rather than executing the first crewed lunar landing since Apollo 17 in 1972.

The Artemis 3 crewed lunar test mission will officially commence when Blue Origin launches its New Glenn rocket. This launch will carry a test version of the Blue Moon Mark 2 lander into low Earth orbit at approximately 273 miles above the surface of the Earth. Blue Origin is currently working to repair its New Glenn launchpad by the end of this year following an explosion during a hotfire test back in May.

Spacecraft Integration and Flight Testing

Following the initial launch, NASA will deploy the Space Launch System with the Orion crew capsule positioned on top. The capsule will transport NASA astronauts Randy Bresnik, Frank Rubio, and Andre Douglas alongside European Space Agency astronaut Luca Parmitano. Orion will establish an orbit roughly 345 miles high before executing a rendezvous with the Blue Moon Mark 2 lander.

After spending a couple of days verifying that system operations are stable, the crew will open the hatch and enter the Blue Origin lander. The astronauts will assess the lander’s capacity to maintain proper atmospheric pressure while testing its flight-control systems, software, and life-support functions. They will then return to Orion, which will undock from the lander to prepare for the subsequent phase of the mission.

SpaceX Starship Rendezvous and Mission Timeline

The final operational phase involves SpaceX launching Starship version 3, which completed its inaugural flight in May. This vehicle will feature a docking system mounted at its forward end to facilitate a connection with Orion. The subsequent rendezvous will last for two hours, during which the crew will remain inside Orion to evaluate docking, undocking, and overall vehicle interaction without entering the Ship capsule.

Following this final rendezvous, the astronauts will retain approximately five additional days in orbit before returning home. NASA indicates these separate docking procedures will demonstrate how Orion interfaces with two distinct commercial lander architectures during a single mission. Additionally, the flight will allow NASA to evaluate the Orion Crew Survival System suits tailored for deep-space environments. Although an exact launch date remains unconfirmed, an agency-wide memo from NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman reported a three-month schedule delay, with a best-case launch window targeted for the summer of 2027.
