MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display
Apple has announced the new MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display, expanding the luxury tier of its high-end laptop lineup. Available in 14-inch and 16-inch sizes, the base models start at $2,899/£2,899 and $3,399/£3,399 respectively, which is $400 more than comparable non-OLED configurations. This release introduces several major updates designed for demanding professional workflows.
Touchscreen input
The MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display introduces touchscreen capabilities to Apple’s laptop line for the first time. Traditional input methods like the keyboard and trackpad remain fully functional alongside the new touch features. The touch sensor is built directly into the display panel to minimize input latency.

Familiar touch gestures are supported, including swiping for scrolling, pinch-to-zoom, and double-tapping windows to fill the screen. macOS 27 Golden Gate includes specific touch enhancements, such as Safari tabs that lift and enlarge when dragged and buttons that scale when fingers approach the screen. System gesture APIs are also available for software developers.
OLED display
This laptop is the first MacBook to utilize a tandem OLED display, stacking two OLED panels together to enhance the viewing experience. Marketed as an Ultra Retina XDR display, this technology delivers deeper blacks, higher contrast ratios, and improved color accuracy. Sustained full-screen brightness reaches 1,000 nits, with a peak of 2,000 nits reserved for HDR content.

Apple labels the screen a portable reference monitor due to its sub-millisecond control over color and luminance based on content, pixel use, temperature, and environment. ProMotion support enables variable refresh rates up to 120Hz, while a new genlock feature syncs the display refresh rate with a connected camera capture rate. Structural updates include a new stability hinge and video stabilization for camera feeds during video calls.
Dynamic Island
A pill-shaped Dynamic Island replaces the traditional display notch, functioning similarly to its iPhone counterpart. It serves as a central hub for Live Activities, notifications, controls, and other user interface elements. The Dynamic Island also acts as the anchor point for Spotlight and Siri AI, opening input text windows directly beneath the pill box.

Thinner and lighter design
The new chassis is smaller than previous MacBook Pro counterparts. The 14-inch model weighs 3 pounds (1.4 kg), making it half a pound lighter, while the 16-inch model weighs 4 pounds (1.82 kg), representing a 0.6-pound reduction.

| Width | 12.31 inches (31.26 cm) | 12.24 inches (31.08 cm) |

| Depth | 9.77 inches (24.81 cm) | 9.62 inches (24.42 cm) |
The design also marks the return of the glowing Apple logo on the lid, which was originally introduced in 1999 on the PowerBook G3 before being phased out starting in 2015.
M5 Pro and M5 Max chips
Powered by either M5 Pro or M5 Max processors, the laptop operates alongside existing MacBook Pro options in Apple’s catalog. The M5 Max outperforms the previous M4 Max by approximately 12 percent in multi-core CPU and 7 percent in single-core CPU Geekbench 7 tests. Available configurations scale up to 128GB of RAM.
Other new features
Additional hardware improvements include a six-speaker audio system with a redesigned woofer for enhanced bass response. The system also supports audio tuning for closed-lid operation when connected to an external display, alongside advanced camera video stabilization and up to 16TB of SSD storage capacity.
Prices
Pricing for the MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display starts at $2,899/£2,899 for the 14-inch M5 Pro and reaches $4,799/£4,799 for the 16-inch M5 Max model. Pre-orders are currently open, with official shipments scheduled to begin on November 6.
