Apple Unveils Thinner, Lighter iPad mini (A20 Pro) with OLED Screen and Major Power Boosts

Apple has unveiled the new iPad mini (A20 Pro), bringing a slight redesign alongside major upgrades to its processor and screen. Described by the company as the most capable and versatile version yet, this eighth-generation tablet follows a naming convention tied directly to its processor rather than a simple generation number.

Driving the performance is the A20 Pro chip, representing a three-generation upgrade over the 2014 A17 Pro model. Apple positions this processor as a major boost for artificial intelligence capabilities. The chip configurations vary by storage capacity, with the 128GB and 256GB models featuring a 5-core CPU and a 16-core Neural Engine, while the 512GB model steps up to a full 6-core chip with a dual 16-core Neural Engine for an additional $300.

Because typical tablet users prioritize media consumption over heavy processing, this hardware upgrade primarily serves as future-proofing. Since customers tend to retain iPads for extended periods, the robust processor ensures the device can comfortably handle everyday tasks years into the future.

Alongside the internal hardware, the screen receives substantial improvements that enhance media viewing. The previous 8.3-inch Liquid Retina LED display has been replaced by an 8.5-inch Super Retina XDR OLED screen. Resolution increases to 2316 x 1512 to accommodate the larger area while maintaining sharpness, and maximum standard brightness rises from 500 nits to 600 nits, with peak HDR brightness reaching 1,200 nits.

The transition to OLED technology delivers deeper blacks, richer colors, and superior handling of high dynamic range content. Additionally, buyers of the 256GB and 512GB configurations can opt for nano-texture glass for an extra $100, bringing a feature previously limited to the iPad Pro down to the mini lineup.

Physical dimensions have also been optimized to improve portability. Although the screen is larger, the chassis footprint has slightly decreased from 195.4 x 134.8 mm to 195.3 x 132.6 mm. The tablet is also notably thinner at 5.4 mm compared to the previous 6.3 mm, and lighter at 0.56 pounds down from 0.65 pounds.

Other hardware enhancements include an official IP67 dust and water resistance rating. The FaceTime camera relocates to the landscape edge and features a larger f/2.0 aperture. Connectivity upgrades bring Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, while the audio system introduces an Acoustic Display design utilizing custom woofers and hidden tweeters. The device also supports fast charging, capable of reaching 50 percent charge in 30 minutes with compatible equipment.

Pricing for the Wi-Fi model begins at $699/£699, while the cellular version starts at $849/£849. Preorders begin on Wednesday, October 28, with official in-store availability starting on Friday, November 6, for the new iPad mini (A20 Pro).
