Mac Pro Conversion Kit

Old desktop towers often end up forgotten when their internal components become obsolete. Owners of older Apple workstations frequently face a dilemma when hardware restrictions prevent further upgrades, yet discarding the iconic aluminum enclosure feels wasteful. A Canadian mechatronics enthusiast has introduced a practical solution for this exact hardware predicament.

Mac Pro 7,1 ATX Conversion Kit

Stefan Bond has launched a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter for the Mac Pro 7,1 (A1991) ATX Conversion Kit project. This specialized hardware package enables users to install modern PC components inside the distinct chassis of a 2019 Apple workstation. Because Apple engineered the original tower strictly for proprietary parts, standard PC motherboards or large graphics cards cannot fit without structural adaptation. The conversion kit solves this compatibility barrier by supplying a main motherboard and power supply mounting plate, custom hard drive sled assemblies, necessary cabling, and specialized fan-adapter printed circuit boards.

Building a Windows PC in an Apple Chassis

The conversion hardware allows builders to assemble a functional Windows personal computer utilizing standard desktop components, which are not included with the package. Because Apple discontinued the Intel-based Mac Pro lineup and transitioned entirely to proprietary silicon, official hardware upgrade paths for the older towers no longer exist. Enthusiasts who prefer maintaining the macOS ecosystem can theoretically configure their completed build as a Hackintosh.

Pricing and Kickstarter Campaign Details

The crowdfunding initiative features a funding target of $10,000 in Canadian currency. Backers who pledge CA$699, which equates to approximately $500 in United States currency, receive a complete conversion kit. Contributors who want to support the development without purchasing hardware can pledge CA$10 to have their names included in the final project documentary video.

The End of an Era for Apple Workstations

Apple officially discontinued the traditional tower form factor earlier this year, concluding a two-decade history for the brand. The final iteration of this design debuted in 2019 featuring Intel processors before receiving a final hardware refresh in 2023 with the M2 Ultra chip. Although the compact Mac Studio currently serves as Apple’s flagship desktop workstation, it lacks the distinct industrial character and customization potential of the classic metal towers that this Mac Pro conversion kit aims to preserve.
