After years of rumors, we have entered a new era with the official introduction of the iPhone Duo at Apple’s latest event.
Design and Display Specs
The folding device utilizes a smaller exterior display when closed and opens up to a larger internal screen to enable better multitasking and media consumption. Apple states that the device is about the size of a passport when closed and opens to reveal the largest iPhone display ever created. The internal display can be comfortably used in both portrait and landscape mode. The custom torque-profile hinge is constructed from over 100 components to close securely and lay flat when opened. A titanium frame provides added strength while keeping the weight down.
The outer display measures 5.4 inches, while the interior panel measures 7.6 inches. The larger display supports split-view multitasking for running multiple instances of the same app or two separate apps simultaneously. Users can use the Apple Pencil on either display for notes and productivity tasks. The exterior screen features a standby mode for viewing a clock or other info without charging, and Touch ID is integrated into the side button for unlocking, alongside Apple Watch unlocking support.
Hardware and Battery Performance
The iPhone Duo is powered by Apple’s new A20 Pro chip and its own C2 modem. The device features two batteries, one positioned on each side. Apple specifies that this setup delivers up to 31 hours of video playback using the inner display and up to 44 hours using only the outer display. When both displays are employed equally, users can manage up to 24 hours of use.
Camera System and Tools
A 48-megapixel Dual Fusion camera system sits on the outside, featuring 48MP main and ultra-wide cameras. The main module includes 12MP 2x optical telephoto capabilities, and both sensors can capture high-resolution photos in 24MP and 48MP. Video capabilities include 4K/120 video on the main camera and 4K time-lapse in 4K Dolby Vision HDR. For front-facing capture, there is a 12MP Center Stage front camera and a 1080p FaceTime camera positioned under the interior display that appears only when needed.
The iPhone Duo also includes dedicated camera tools. Smart Take ensures everyone is posed before snapping a picture, and users can utilize the higher-resolution rear cameras for selfies with a preview on the outer display. Duo Preview provides subjects with a preview on the outer display, and Kid Cue plays helpful animations to direct children’s attention. Additionally, Duo FaceTime allows companions to join a video call using the outer display.
Pricing and Availability
The iPhone Duo is available in two colors: Night Sky and Star White. Pricing starts at $1,999 for the 256GB model. Preorders begin on October 16, and the device will launch in 70 countries on October 23.
